Common Hair Dilemma

All right so whenever I write this column every week I try and make is as personal as I can.

I don’t really want anyone reading something they don’t think is true, or something they just couldn’t believe. It needs to reach the reader (that’s you) on a more emotional level.

Not crying emotional just enough to know what I’m talking about.

            Well so funny thing is I’ve acquired a new roommate and she is most certainly fantastic. We love her to pieces.

However poor little roommate has run into a mighty problem, one which most of us encounter.

            She wants to get a haircut but is struggling with choosing one that she thinks will look best on her. So in an effort to help her and woman kind I’ve compiled a set of guidelines which you may or may not find useful.

1. What won’t you do ?

Before deciding what you want as a haircut make sure you have a set of things that you won’t leave with or without. A lot of people don’t like bangs, whether its because of a skin condition or the nuisance that they are , we all have secret reasons for choosing something. The key point is to know what they are so that you can leave , for the most part, content and satisfied with your new do.

2. Analyze that!

This may sound like a bizarre thing to do but try looking at yourself in a mirror; and I mean REALLY look at yourself. Look at your face shape and skin tone. Look at your eye color. Then hold up paint swatches up to your skin and immediately you’ll see how different colors drastically change the way your skin looks. Some colors will you look noticeably darker, some lighter. And one thing people never really pay attention to is the undertones of your skin. This is also a very important thing. Each color ha different undertones already in it so therefore when bringing it up to our skin our undertones will peek out much more.

3. Magazine

A really great way of finding which hairstyles we like best is with a hairdressing magazine. Looking as to how haircuts suit others really lets our own minds run wild with possibilities. Sometimes we need to imagine something on someone else before we can imagine it on ourselves.

A hairdressing magazine is also really great because they allow you to cut and paste hair onto a picture of yourself etc..

In general they’re just great ways to get better ideas as to how to style and cut our hair.

i personally would consider him a pop culture realist.
he draws people and objects from "popular culture" and soft core porn, however he does so in a very realistic manner.
just recently he came out with his newest set of paintings. i personally think they're great. some of the lips look slightly off but in general they're extremely well done.
there is one painting that is not from the set and you'll know which one but i just felt like including it to show his other work.

So, you've spent your whole life happily smug in your star sign. You're a fish! Swimming in two directions! You're intuitive, imaginative, unworldly! And then today's Web is aflame with the news: You are not a Pisces. You are an Aquarius. Your star sign has been wrong your whole life. All along, you've been a freaking water carrier. This is not cool.

According to Parke Kunkle, a board member of the Minnesota Planetarium Society, cool or not, it's written in the stars. Star signs were created by ancient Babylonians some 2,000 years ago by tracking where the sun was in the sky each month. However, the moon's gravitational pull has slowly moved the Earth in its axis, creating about a one-month bump in the stars' alignment, reports the Minnesota Star Tribune. Now, during what we think as the month of Pisces, the sun is actually in the sign of Aries.

The new dates would therefore be:

Is this the dawning of a new age of Aquarius? Well, Kunkle is an astronomer who is not too keen on the practice of astrology. When asked by telephone if the new star locations now require us all to switch our loyalty to a new sign, he demurred. "I can tell you what the science is, but I'm not going to tell you what your personality is based on the location of things."

Commentators have also responded to the initial article, saying the new location of the earth does not matter. One wrote, "Oh for heaven's sake (oops), how can people with Ph.D.s be so ignorant? Of course astrologers know about precession -- they've known since about 200 BC. Horoscopes always take it into account... Sheesh."

The commentator is correct that this is not new information. Live Science reported on the role of "precession" on astrology in 2007. Precession is the phenomenon of the moon causing the earth to "wobble" on its axis.

Other astrologists say the ancient system was merely a practice used as a helpful hint for diviners. Blogger Jamie on Darkstar Astrologywrites, "It is the planets moving across the backdrop of the stars which influence our lives, not the planets moving through imagined 30 degree divisions on a piece of paper."

So all those hapless men and women who rushed out in college to get a scorpion tattooed on their back don't need to now rush to sign up for laser remover. If you're going to believe that all the people born on your birthday are imbued with certain traits similar to your own in some mystical, ancient manner, you might as well believe it does not matter where the stars are in the sky to begin with. On the flip side, if you've never liked your sign, here's your chance to switch.

Our Inability to Move Past an Inescapable Image

I have this brutal addiction. I love seeing what actresses are wearing in TV shows.

 I love seeing how stylists create their outfits and utilize current fashion trends.

But I sometimes wonder if I’m constantly comparing myself to girls and/or women who have been airbrushed and professionally made up and dressed.

I understand that this is constantly been something that’s debated in society, but do you really ever stop and think about it? Are people today being influenced by media to such an extent that it’s “brainwashing” us?

            Everyone I suppose has an opinion on this issue but if we simply look at some facts and examples we’ll see that this is far too true.

The example I’m going to use are Bratz Dolls. Yes, the infamous Bratz. Scantily dressed with far too much makeup on their faces, and clothes in their closets that scream High Maintenance.

Bratz dolls are bright and colorfully dressed girls who love to shop do their hair and makeup and essentially be the “hottest” dolls in the toy box. When children are in their developing stages, 4-11, and old enough to play with such toys, these dolls leave a lasting impression on them. Their brains, like sponges, are left with an image of what society has deemed acceptable. And if it so happens to be that Bratz dolls are what they’ve grown up with since youth then they may hold themselves to such a standard.

            Of course there is the occasional witty person who mentions how our generation grew up with Barbie and yet we don’t compare ourselves to her. However to fully analyze this comparison I feel as though Barbie needs an equally harsh judging.

Barbie’s appearance is so far from realistic that it’s almost painful. Her dresses were short pink and flirty and her legs were far too long. However the extras that could be purchased for Barbie weren’t exceedingly superficial. Barbie could be a nurse and help others, she could be a veterinarian and tend to wounded animals or she could pursue a career as an animal trainer. There was an idea surrounding Barbie, an idea that created her identity. Barbie was a strong female who could choose her own path in life, even her name is commonly used, Barbie – Barbara. If we take a deeper look at Bratz and define the title the word, as per the New Oxford American Dictionary, means: Badly Behaved Child, Spoiled, Rascal.

"PROSTITUTES ?"

This in itself is the foundation of the character, and associating such a word immediately gives off a terrible image.

You may be asking yourself how this has anything to do with fashion but let me remind you that the way women portray themselves begins at a young age.

Many young women of course can shake this impression as they grow up however there’s already an idea imprinted in society that keeps women portrayed in such an impossible way. and therefore not only do they grow up with it but it follows them into their youth. Therefore I think it’s time that we change this inescapable image and help the women of tomorrow.

As Jean Piaget once said “The principle goal of education in the schools should be creating men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done”. So let’s take a minute and think abut what we’re teaching ourselves and what we’re teaching the young women of the world.
